League Association and DFB back match-rigging investigation
The League Association and the German Football Association (DFB) will be doing everything within their respective powers to help shed light on fresh suspicions of match rigging.

Football's European governing body UEFA and Bochum-based public prosecutors investigating the affair will have the unconditional backing of both the League Association and the DFB.

”DFL are offering total support”

"Even although this only partially affects the German professional game, the League Association and the DFL are offering the fullest possible support to the investigation. We owe it to the fans to do everything in our power to guarantee honest competition. In this instance, too, we must operate from an initial assumption of innocence. What is clear though is that we cannot tolerate the manipulation of as much as a single game”, League President Dr. Reinhard Rauball said.

DFB President Dr. Theo Zwanziger commented, "We are pleased that the state authorities are pursuing all suspicious circumstances with great competence and the appropriate severity. As criminal acts could be involved, the public prosecutors in Bochum are in charge of proceedings. We are very grateful to them for their diligent work and they have our utmost confidence.”

The DFB supervisory committee will be closely following the ongoing investigations and, if so requested, will become actively involved in them. Should preliminary suspicions be confirmed, the DFB will initiate the necessary disciplinary procedures. A framework procedure was established in 2005 as a result of the match-rigging cases involving referee Robert Hoyzer. One ruling set out in those statutes is that if a match has been manipulated, no case can be made for having the result overturned or the match replayed after the end of the season in question.

”German football will act with the same consistency”

Should it be proven in the course of the ongoing investigations that currently-active players, referees or coaches have behaved inappropriately, sports disciplinary proceedings will be initiated against those involved.

"The courts are helping us in the battle to ensure honest competition. It's good if they take consistent action. If coaches, referees or players are charged, German football will act with the same consistency, using all the disciplinary tools at its disposal”, Dr. Zwanziger said.

League Association President Dr. Rauball added that, "Since 2005, the League and the DFB have been cooperating closely on a system geared to effectively monitoring the betting market in order to rapidly pinpoint any irregularities. To this day, however, we have not been in receipt of any such warnings. Subsequently, we will further step up our efforts in this area, although a 100 percent guarantee of success will never be attainable.”
