Bayern face group stage exit, Wolfsburg almost through
On Tuesday, FC Bayern München and VfL Wolfsburg were in action on Champions League matchday four. While Bayern suffered a painful 2-0 home defeat to Bordeaux, Wolfsburg secured a convincing 3-0 away victory in Istanbul. Bayern are now in danger of not reaching the next stage, whereas Wolfsburg look in great shape to proceed to the next round.
FC Bayern München 0 - 2 Girondins Bordeaux
Bayern kicked things off with a dangerous ball by Braafheid after just two minutes. His intended cross from the left-hand side turned into a dangerous shot on goal, which Bordeaux keeper Cedric Carrasso deflected onto the crossbar.
Following the good start, Bayern failed to establish themselves as the dominant side. They had more possession than their opponents Bordeaux, but often gave the ball away too easily. The absence of Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben became more and more apparent, as Bayern were missing the creative element in midfield.
Bayern unlucky, Bordeaux take the lead
Bayern were unlucky not score the opener after 32 minutes. First, Schweinsteiger forced Carrasso to a fantastic save following a free-kick from 25 meters. Just seconds later, Bayern were denied a penalty kick when Diarra clearly stopped the ball from crossing the goal-line with his arm.
In the 38rd minute however, it was Gourcuff who put the visitors in the lead. A Wendel free-kick sailed into Bayern's penalty area, where no Bayern player managed to mark the French international. From short range, he nodded the ball past Hans-Jörg Butt.
Bayern seemed to be stunned by the setback and failed to create further chances before the break. Bordeaux scored from their first chance and Bayern were a bit unlucky with a refereeing decision, but overall the German giants were too passive to seriously trouble the French champions.
Robben makes his presence felt
At half time, Robben came on for Klose and he immediately appeared to make an impact on the hosts' game. Schweinsteiger blindly released a ball towards Bordeaux' goal, Toni was left unmarked but his volley from thirteen meters went well over the bar.
On the hour mark, Bayern stepped up to the plate and created good chances. But neither Robben or Gomez were able to level the score. At this point, Bordeaux had completely stopped playing up the pitch, waiting for counter attacks.
Chamakh doubles the lead
Following a short phase whene Bayern looked to be in control, the game's attacking fervour again began to diminish. The Bavarians failed to play a successful final pass and thus time started to run out for the 2001 Champions League winners. In the 90th minute, Bordeaux' Marouane Chamakh profited from a mix-up between Holger Badstuber and Hans-Jörg Butt and had no troubles placing the ball in the empty goal.
With this win, Bordeaux have secured a place in the next stage, whereas Bayern can no longer reach the next round without outside help. They need to win the remaining two games and hope that Bordeaux beat Juventus on matchday five.
Besiktas Istanbul 0 - 3 VfL Wolfsburg
Wolfsburg started off as the dominant team. After Martins, Gentner and Costa missed the first opportunities, it was Misimovic who put the visitors in front. Following a controlled pass-movement up the pitch, Misimovic decided to fire a shot from roughly 28-meters away, from a central position. His left-footed strike became unstoppable for Besiktas keeper Hakan Arikan, as it precisely sailed into the top right corner.
Benaglio is put to the test
Wolfsburg continued to control the match and create chances. The most important aspect of the first half was however, that the German champions were able to rely on a solid defence. In the 34th minute however, it was Benaglio who kept his team in the lead. Ekrem Dag drilled a shot on target and the Swiss keeper stopped the ball, showing great reflexes.
Besiktas cranked up a gear shortly before half time, but failed to create any clear chances. The 1-0 lead for Wolfsburg was deserved, considering the amount of chances the German Bundesliga champions had forged.
The second half began just as the first one had come to an end, with Besiktas as the more active side. Thankfully, Wolfsburg were able to rely on Benaglio during this phase, as he showed a very solid performance keeping his team on track for the away win.
Gentner and Dzeko seal the deal for Wolfsburg
Wolfsburg managed to overcome the pressure period from Besiktas and slowly began to invest more into their offence. In the 80th minute, Gentner converted the rebound after Arikan had blocked a Dzeko attempt. Seven minutes later, Misimovic played a fine pass into Dzeko's path and he kept his cool by placing the ball past Arikan to make it 3-0 for Wolfsburg.
All in all, Wolfsburg put in a convincing performance in Istanbul and now hold all the aces as they could already book the ticket for the next round with a draw against Moscow on Champions League matchday five.
