Freiburg mourn the loss of Achim Stocker
The Bundesliga and SC Freiburg were left grieving following the news of President Achim Stocker's death at the age of 74.

The Freiburg chairman passed away on Sunday evening having suffered a heart attack last week.

Massive loss

The board and employees at the club as well as the players expressed their deepest sympathy for Achim Stocker's wife Hanne and children Sabine and Christian.

SC Freiburg lose a Chairman dedicated the club and one who lead with discretion and humanity, but also a necessary dose of realism. Stocker embodied the ideals of the club and helped make Freiburg into the credible, professional outfit they are today.

Success with Freiburg

Achim Stocker had been in charge at Freiburg since 1972, a reign which lasted 37 years and one which saw him become the oldest serving President in German professional football. During his time Stocker purchased the club and earned recognition and respect throughout Germany.

In times of difficulty, both on and off the pitch, Stocker fought tirelessly for Freiburg, eventually leading the club through the most successful periods in their history including promotion to the 2. Bundesliga in 1978 and their first season in the top flight in 1993. Later he presided over two UEFA cup appearances and saw his side return to the Bundesliga three times. Freiburg achieved promotion once again last summer.

Stocker's achievements were officially recognised by Freiburg at the club's centenary celebrations in 2004.
