Holger Badstuber gets in the way of a spectacular effort from VfB's Ciprian Marica
Honours even in Stuttgart
VfB Stuttgart and Bayern München played out a goalless draw in a largely uninspiring southern derby. For Markus Babbel's troubled hosts, the result did at any rate end a five-game losing streak in all competitions.

VfB started at pace in front of a sell-out 42,000 crowd in the Mercedes-Benz Arena. With just three minutes played, Christian Träsch connected with a cross from Thomas Hitzlsperger inside the box, pulling a great save out of Bayern keeper Jörg Butt. Three minutes later, Julian Schieber fired in a shot from the corner of the box which Butt again managed to turn over the bar.

Chance for Gomez

The visitors' first sniff of goal came in the 11th-minute, Anatoliy Tymoshchuk finishing off a neat move with a low shot from 18 metres out which VfB keeper Jens Lehmann dealt with safely. Bayern were starting to warm to the task now and Lehmann was soon called into action again, turning away another Tymoshchuk effort for a corner.

By the half-hour mark, the Munich side were increasingly asserting their authority over proceedings, although a 38th-minute shot on the turn by VfB's Ciprian Marica did require the swift intervention of Holger Badstuber, who blocked it for a corner. Two minutes before half time, Mario Gomez shrugged off a couple of his former team-mates inside the box at the other end, but his angled shot hit the side netting.

Toni makes his presence felt

The second half began as the first had ended, with few chances of note for either side in an increasingly scrappy contest. Luca Toni replaced the low-key Miroslav Klose up front for Bayern in the 67th minute and within seconds of coming onto the pitch, the Italian striker came within inches of connecting with a dangerous cross from Edson Braafheid.

Not long after that, Toni was booked for crashing into Lehmann following a long free kick. As the game entered its final phase, Bayern were without doubt the team chasing the victory with the greater urgency. Toni netted a Philipp Lahm cross in the 86th minute, but the linesman instantly called it offside - and that was the last hurrah from either side in a far-from-classic derby encounter.
