HSV striker Ivica Olic (L) had a lively match but failed to score
HSV secure UEFA Cup spot
Bundesliga side Hamburger SV have secured a place in the UEFA Cup after scoring goals for fun in the second half against Dacia Chisinau.
The "Red shorts" won the Intertoto Cup match 4-0 in front of 50,800 fans in their HSH Nordbank Arena.
The first leg eight days ago had finished in a 1-1 draw.
Four goals after the break
Vincent Kompany opened the scoring with a beautiful volley from a corner five minutes into the second half before skipper Raphael van der Vaart (71) scored with a header.
Collin Benjamin made it 3-0 five minutes later. David Jarolim (89) put the icing on the cake for HSV.
Full debut for Zidan
Mohamed Zidan was handed his first start for HSV, and the Hamburgers started the match spirited and offered neat combinations and one-touch football.
The visiting team from Eastern Europe rarely left their own half and defended with eight or nine players.
Chances go begging
Despite that HSV had a lot of good scoring opportunities. Zidan missed two good chances after 6 and 18 minutes. Ivica Olic was unable to convert opportunities after 9 and 45 minutes.
Van der Vaart (34) and Kompany (40) could have scored as well, but somehow the team from Moldova went it at half-time with a clean sheet.
Kompany breaks the deadlock
A set-piece broke the deadlock when Kompany met Piotr Trochowski's corner on the volley.
Dacia tried to attack a bit more, but they failed to create any danger while HSV used the space for more goals.
The Hamburgers now have to eliminate one more team in the UEFA Cup qualification round 2 on August 16 and 30 to reach the UEFA Cup proper.
